Widgets and the “Foldable” plugins

Both the Fold Page List and Fold Category List plug-ins provide CMS-type functionality missing from vanilla Wordpress by providing replacement calls to the wp_list_pages and wp_list_cats template tags that come as standard. This provides parameter/functional compatibility with the original calls, while extending their capabilities, but retains the complexity of working with long parameter lists that can be a source of “It’s not working” emails, and a barrier to wider use.

Widgets solve the problems of call complexity, but where to find widgets that are compatible with these two folding plug-ins?

There are three places that I am aware of.

Automattic: Home of Widgets

Used to setup the contents of the sidebar, this widget will work with Fold Category List if the hierarchy box in the category widget setup page is checked.

Fold Page List should also work with the Pages Widget.

Dragonflyeye: Fold Categories List Widget

Tom Belknap at Dragonflyeye adapted the original Fold Category List plug-in to Widgets and release his compatible version at the above link.

Media Projekte: King Widgets

King widgets are a suite of widgets, among them King Pages and King Categories. Both widgets offer compatibility with the WebspaceWorks folding plug-ins, provided they are installed.

Using Widgets to setup folding

Each widget provides an interface for easy setup of the Page and/or Category listing without the need to resort to parameter wrestling. Used together with WebspaceWorks’ Wordpress folding plug-ins extends this capability to support collapsible lists.

Statement of the obvious: In all cases you will need to have both the widget and the appropriate folding plug-ins installed and activated, plus have the widget correctly configured if folding is to work.
